Snuggled in the higher altitudes of the Himalayan region in
Puraula tehsil is Govind Wildlife Sanctuary.
Situated
amidst the lush green meadows of the Uttarkashi
district, the most beautiful part of the Garhwal region with its
magnificent snowclad peaks and glaciers, the sanctuary is spread over an
area of 953 sq. kms.
Established in 1955, the region includes mountains like Swarg Rohini,
Black Peak and Bandarpunch. The Har-ki-Dun,
a popular destination for trekkers is famous for its verdant surroundings.
THE WILDLIFE POPULATION
Govind Widlife Sanctuary situated in Uttarkashi, is home to many animals
like snow leopards, brown and black bears, tahr, musk deer, serow, bharal,
monal, trogopan chir, koklas and khaleej, pheasant and chukor.
The vegetation of the region includes bhojpatra, deodar, fir, sprice,
kharsu, banj, pine and pangar.
HOW TO GET THERE
Air: Nearest airport is Jolly Grant,
Dehradun (195 km).
Rail: The nearest railhead is Dehradun, 195 km.
Road: Accessible by road via Rishikesh-Uttarkashi or via
Mussourie-Purola-Saur, with bus services available upto Uttar Kashi,
Purola, Naitwar and Saur-Sankri.
