RELIGION IN UTTAR PRADESH
Main Religions: Hinduism & Islam
Other Religions: Buddhism, Jainism, Christianity & Sikhism
Uttar Pradesh reflects a unique amalgam of various
religions, though it is considered to be the seat of Hinduism. While it is
believed that the great epics of the Hindus, Ramayana and Mahabharata,
have their origin in places within the state, Uttar Pradesh has also been
a witness to the main events of Jainism and Buddhism.
The
medieval period witnessed the advent of Muslim rule, and the spread of
Islam in the state. This unique synthesis saw the rise of great preachers
like Ramdas, Kabir and Tulsidas.
In 6th century B.C., Uttar Pradesh witnessed the rise of two new
religions-Jainism and Buddhism. It was at Sarnath that Buddha preached his
first sermon and laid the foundations of his order while it was at
Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh that Buddha
breathed his last. Lord Mahavira, the founder of Jainism is said to have
breathed his last at Doora, U.P.
Although, the majority of the population practises Hinduism, Muslims form
15% of the population. Followers of Buddhism, Jainism, Christianity, and
Sikhism together constitute less than 1 percent of the total population of
Uttar Pradesh.
