Main Findings: Jain Relics
Pudukkottai is 53-km from Tiruchirappalli and 57-km away
from Thanjavur. Pudukkottai was a Princely state in the 17th century AD
and it has rich reserves of archaeological and cultural remains at
Kodumbalur, Narthamalai, Kudumianmalai, Kunnandarkoil, Sittannavasal,
Thirumayam and Avudaiyarkoil.
The numerous dolmens, stone circles and other forms of megalithic burials
in the district indicate the antiquity of this region dating back to
pre-historic and protohistorical times. This tract is mentioned in the
Sangam classics.
Jain Cave Temple Of Sittannavasai
The nearby Sittannavasal has a rock cut Jain cave temple dating back to
2nd Century BC. One can see few sculptures of Jain Thirthankaras in the "Ardhamandapam"
and inner shrine of the Cave temple.
Kudumianmalai
Kudumianmalai, located about 20-km from Pudukkottai, has a beautifully
sculptured temple with a thousand pillar-hall dedicated to
Sikhagireeswarar. There is also a rock-cut cave temple called "Melakkoil",
which was excavated during the time of Mahendravarma Pallavan.
HOW TO GET THERE
Air: Nearest airport is at Tiruchirappalli about
50-km away from Pudukkottai.
Rail: Pudukkottai lies on the Chennai Rameswarm Railway Line, buy
only few trains pass through it.
Road: Pudukkottai is connected to Rameswaram, Madurai,
Tiruchirappalli, Thanjavur and all other towns by road. For local
transport tourist can take taxis and city buses. Local buses cover all
tourist centres in and around Pudukkottai.
