In
the serene surrounding amidst forest of oak, ash and birch is an
organisation to advance the Tibetan language and its literature on the "Enlightened
one", the only one of its kind in the world of Mahayana Buddhism.
Ornate woodcarvings and murals decorate the lavishly decorated interior.
The Collections
Altars hold images of the Buddhas, Boddhisattavas and Tantric deities,
while cabinets in the great halls are packed with 28,000 volumes,
xylographs, translations of the original teachings of the Lord Buddha and
treatises by distinguished scholars. It is, indeed, the largest collection
of any Asian Institute.
Museum
The museum section contains a vast number of ritualistic chortens, brass
bells, dorjis, rosaries, rare tankhas and 200 icons and prized object
d'art. It has won international acclaim; the collection of Mahayana
scriptures in the institute makes it the only one of its kind in the
world. It is an essential 'must' on the list of scholars of Tibetology or
Buddhism.
Namgyal Institute of Tibetology is a premier institute in the world that
conducts research in the language and culture of Tibet. It has on its
faculty eminent scholars. The library and museum of the institute are open
to the public on working days from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm and are closed on
Sundays and other govt. holidays.
His Holiness Dalai Lama laid the foundation stone of the institute in
1957 and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru inaugurated it in 1958.
