PARVATI HILL AND TEMPLE
Presiding Deity: Shiva, Ganesh, Vishnu and Kartikeya
Built by: Balaji Baji Rao
Parvati hill is in the southernmost part of the
Pune City . It is a
famous landmark of the city with a group of beautiful temples. These
temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva, Parvati Ganesha and Kartikeya, the
family of Lord Siva. A steep flight of 108 narrow steps leads to the hill
top temple built by Balaji Baji Rao. It is not very difficult to climb up
to the top by wide stone stairs.
The
Parvati Temple was the erstwhile private shrine of the Peshwa rulers,
which is now a popular tourist spot. The Parvati Museum houses replicas of
ancient paintings, old manuscripts, weapons and coins. The hill has a good
view of the nearby area. It is said that from this hill, the last Peshwa
ruler watched desolately as his army was defeated at the hands of the
British.
