MAHALAXMI/MAHALAKSHMI TEMPLE
Presiding Deity: Mahakali, Mahalakshmi And Mahasaraswati
The Mahalaxmi Temple located at the northern foot of the Malabar Hill, a part now called Breach Candy in Mumbai , is a popular holy site. This is Mumbai's oldest temple dedicated to Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati. There are effigies of several Hindu gods here and many devotees visit this temple every year.
Legend
It is said that in the 1890s, when a British engineer was constructing the adjoining causeway, the sea always troubled the project, every time the foundation was laid, the sea would rush in and destroy it. Then one night, a labourer dreamt of Goddess Laxmi (Lakshmi) who ordered him to dig out an idol from a spot under the causeway and build a shrine on it. This was done with due alacrity, and the causeway was ultimately completed.
Idols
In the temple there are three beautiful images of Hindu goddesses, Mahalaksmi, Mahasaraswati and Mahakali, which are made of gold. It is believed that these images of worship have been founded in the sea. All three images are adorned with nose rings, gold bangles and pearl necklaces and the image of Mahalaxmi is shown riding a tiger and a demon (Mahishasur) in tandem.
Festivals
Navaratri festival is celebrated with special interest. During Navaratri festival, devoted Hindus throng this temple in great numbers to offer coconut, flowers and sweets to the goddesses.
HOW TO GET THERE
As this temple is in Mumbai it is very easy to access this temple. The nearest Station is Mahalaxmi (Western Railway). Tourists can also take city buses from any point of the city.
