SHREE CHINTAMANI TEMPLE AT THEUR
Presiding Deity: Chintamani Ganesh
Special Feature: Overry-Separate Section For Meditation
Built By: Shri Daharnidhar Maharaj Devji, Son Of Maurya Gosaviji
Theur is a village, which lies along the river Mulamutha in Haveli Taluka of Pune district in Maharashtra. It is 30-km away from Pune and is one of the most ancient areas of Maharashtra. It is believed that at Theur, Morya Gosavi attained siddhi (knowledge). Shri Daharnidhar Maharaj Devji, son of Maurya Gosaviji, erected the temple here.
Legend
The legend goes like this, a king, called Abhijeet, was
asked by Saint Vaishampayan to meditate for a son. Gunavati, wife of the
king soon gave birth to a son and the prince was named Gunn. Abhijeet's
son grew up into brave and hard-working prince. One day he went to the
ashram of sage Kapil. Kapil invoked the Chintamani jewel and prepared a
feast of five delicacies for the prince.
The prince liked the jewel and craved for the jewel and when Kapil
refused to part with it, he snatched it from the sage. Kapil sought the
help of Ganesha and the Lord defeated the young prince and returned the
Chintamani to the sage. The sage, however, refused to accept it and
offered the same to the Lord. Ganesha then took the name Chintamani and
made the Kadamba tree in the ashram his abode.
The Temple
Shri Daharnidhar Maharaj Devji constructed the temple and
Madhavrao Peshwa built the Sabhamandap of the temple after 100 years. The
Sabhamandap of the temple is made of wood and one can see a fountain in
its centre, which is made of stone. The main gate of the temple faces
North. The Peshwa built a road stretching from the main door to the river
near by. Recently the shikhar- the crest, of the temple was anointed in
gold.
The idol of Chintamani is purvabhimukha-facing east, the body of the idol
has no clear feature formation. The eyes are studded with precious stones.
An interesting feature of this temple is that there is a separate section
for meditation. It is called an Overry. These sections were found often in
old temples but temples made in recent times do not have these sections.
Other Attractions
There was a residential palace of Bajirao Peshwa near the temple. He died here in 1772, following which his wife Ramabai committed Sati. Ramabai's memorial is at the riverbank. In the premises of this temple one can also see a small temple dedicated to Lord Shivaa.
