RAMKUND LAKE

Considered: Pious
Contains Mortal Remains Of: Gandhiji, Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Y.B. Chavan
The most important place in Panchavati, Nashik
is the Ramkund Lake. It is so called because it is believed that Lord Rama
and Sita used to bathe in this tank during their exile. A dip in this
sacred lake is considered very pious. It is in these holy waters that
every Hindu wishes his or her ashes to be immersed so as to attain '
Moksha' or liberation of the soul.
Chitrarao Khatarkar built this holy tank, which is 27m by 12m, in 1696
AD. Situated nearby is Gandhi Lake having a memorable monument made out of
white marble, in memory of the Father of the Nation. The ashes were
dropped in Ramkund after Gandhiji passed away on 30th January 1948. The
ashes of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Y.B. Chavan and others
have also been immersed at Ramkund. Mortal remains ('Asthi') immersed in
this Kund, are immediately absorbed in the water.
