Vembanad
Lake, one of the largest fresh water lakes in Asia, is 12km west from
Kottayam. Kottayam
is a vast network of rivers and canals, which empty into the great expanse
of water called Vembanad Lake.

Tourism destination, provides boating, fishing and sightseeing
experiences that are truly exhilarating.
Vembanad, the beautiful reservoir stretches across the verdant lands of
Kerala. The lake has been the reason for the flourishment of the flora and
fauna in this region.
Vembanad Kayal, as it is called in the regional language, is a tank that
acts against the floods. The local people in their attractive clothings
are found searching for the tasty Karimeen fish.
The Kumarakom Tourist Village offers houseboat cruises and holiday
packages. One can take a boat for cruises around the lake. There are
houseboats that take one across the lake, making one's trip memorable.
PRIME ATTRACTIONS
Water Bird Sanctuary:
At the edge of the grounds of an old estate is a water-bird sanctuary.
Domestic birds such as water Fowl, Cuckoo and Wild Duck can be seen in
abundance here, as well as Siberian Storks, which migrate to this area
spread over 14 acres, each year.
The Snake Boat Races:
The serene lake comes alive during 'Onam' with a spectacular water
regatta: the snake boat races. It is indeed amazing to watch oarsmen,
atleast hundreds in one boat, slice their way through the waters to the
rhythm of their full -throated singing.
HOW TO GET THERE
By Air: Kumarakom, the jetty landing, is accessible
from Cochin Airport.
By Rail: Kottayam Railway Station is 15 km from Kumarakom.
By Road: Kerala State Road Transport Corporation buses have good
service from Cochin, Thrivananthapuram
Calicut.
Local Transport: One can also travel by boat, right from Cochin.
There is regular boat service from Cochin Boat Jetty to Kumarakom.
