Surrounded in summer by lush green fields, Kibber stands at
the head of a trail that picks its way north across the mountains, via the
high Parang-La pass (5,557m) to Ladakh. The village of Kibber locally
known as Khyipur, is perched on a vast rocky-stretch of land.
In
Kibber, all houses have been built by stone, instead of mud or unburned
brick so commonly used in the houses of the Spiti valley. Even at this
height, the village has plenty of cultivable land and Barley and peas are
cultivated once in a year. There is also a Buddhist Gompa known as Yaktin
Gompa located over here.

CITIES
Losar: Losar is last habited village,
which travellers find after ascending through the course of the Peeno
stream, 57-km from Kaza village, situated at an elevation of 4,079m. There

MONASTERIES
Yang Yud Gompa: It is located in a secluded narrow gorge of Kaza
Nullah, around 8-km above Kaza. The head of the monastery-Lama belongs to
Tibet. It is serving western part central Spiti.
Kungri Gompa: 10-km from Attargo in Pin valley Spiti river is
crossed to enter the valley. Built around the year 1330 A.D., the Kungri
monastery provides unmistakable evidence of the impact of the tantric
cults of Buddhism as practiced in Pin valley.
OTHERS
Ladarcha: Ladarcha is the name of an open ground, beyond Kibber
village, where a traditional trade fair use to be held in earlier times.
Today the fair has become an epitome of Spitian culture and a way of life.
ADVENTURE
Trekking: Situated at about 4,205m
above M.S.I. Gete is the highest permanently inhabited village of Spiti. A
jeepable road goes there, and also a walk of about 6-km from Kibber
through alpine pastures takes one their. Another 6-km trek is of

Road: The only way to get to Kibber from Kaza, 16km from
southeast, is to catch the bus that lumbers up the mountain every two days
during the summer, or to hike.
PLACES TO STAY
There are limited guesthouses in Kibber: Rainbow, a traditional building with a café and a terrace close to the centre of the village is the best option one can have in Kibber. Further up to the Kaza village, the newer and slightly more comfortable guesthouse Penang is situated, which also has a restaurant.
CLIMATE
Kibber is very cold in winter but have quite a pleasant
summer season. Situated in a dry zone, it hardly receives any rainfall and
is considered a trekker's paradise from May to November. Heavy wollens in
winters and light wollens in summers are recommended.
