OSMAN SAGAR / GANDIPET
Major Attractions : The Lake, The Parks, And A Road That Gives A Proper View Of The Lake From Above
Nearby Attractions : Treasure Island, Elles World And Ocean Park
20-km away from the center of
Hyderabad , is
Osman Sagar. This beautiful lake was formed by constructing a dam on the
river Musi in the year 1920 by H.E.H Mir Osman Ali Khan, planned by
renowned engineer of the time Mokshagundam Visweswarayya for the water
supply to Hyderabad city.
The
Main Water Resource
The catchment area of the lake is 46-sq-km. It is the main drinking water
source for the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. Popularly known
as Gandipet, it is an excellent picnic spot with well-laid gardens. It is.
The major attractions of the place are the
lake, the parks, and a road that
gives a proper view of the lake from above.
A Beautiful Scenic Spot
Throughout the year - weekdays or weekends - Gandipet beckons
holidaymakers from every nook and corner of the twin cities. It has been
developed as a public recreation area with well-laid out lush green
gardens and swimming pool. The breeze is cool and soothing and the
ambience serene. There are a couple of eat-outs around, but usually people
carry food along with them. The big disappointment is that one won't be
allowed to take a swim in the lake or go anywhere near the waters for that
matter.
Usually people visit Gandipet after the rainy season when the reservoir
is full. During this period boating is a common sight.
Treasure Island and the amusement
parks, Elless World and
Ocean Park are nearby.
